Course Selection 2010-2011

Parent Information Evenings for Next Year’s Course Selection
Grade 10 + 11 – Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 7 pm
Grade 8 + 9 – Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 7 pm

Student Information
Students receive course calendar booklets & course selection sheets at the following times:

Grade 8’s: Assembly on Fri. Feb. 12 – Block A
Grade 9’s: Assembly on Fri. Feb. 12 – Block D
Grade 10’s: Class visits the week of February 8 – Block B
Grade 11’s: Class visits the week of February 15 – Block C

Data Input: Week of February 21
Students will bring their completed course selection sheets to the computer lab in order to enter their choices in the computer.
Beginning this year School districts in BC are expected to use the new computer system, BCeSIS for Course Selection. Students will be guided through the process by counsellors and administrators.

Course Selection 2009

Grade 10 Parents, you are invited to attend an information evening Thursday, January 15th at 7 pm in the Wheelhouse Theatre. The focus will be Course Selection for current Grade 10’s who are planning their senior program for 2009-2010. Topics include courses and credits necessary for graduation, researching post secondary requirements, scholarships, Coops in Humanities, Science and Mechanics, apprenticeships, partnerships and more.

2008 – 2009 Language Challenge

Are you fluent in French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, Punjabi or Korean? Applications for language challenges will be available in October in the counselling department. These exams, held in February, will test students’ ability in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Applications are due in to Mrs. Bucholz by November 14, 2008.

This procedure allows students to write an examination for graduation credit in grade 11 and 12 language courses where prior learning has occurred: French 11/12, German 11/12, Japanese 11/12, Mandarin 11/12 (simplified & traditional), Punjabi 11/12, Spanish 11/12 and Korean 11/12 Students who are in Grade 10 may challenge a Grade 11 exam, and those in Grade 11 may challenge a Grade 11 or 12 exam. At the grade 12 level, students who take the Challenge Exam have the option of writing the final provincial examination.

Mandarin Workshops

Workshops are being offered for Mandarin speaking parents. Topics include: Graduation Requirements, Post-Secondary Applications, Canadian Universities and Colleges, Scholarship Applications. All workshops will be translated into Mandarin (Chinese). All Workshops are conducted in English and will be translated into Mandarin. Workshops are free but registration is required. Earl Marriott Scholarships and Bursaries

Applications are now available in the counselling centre or by clicking below. Students can fill out one form to apply for a number of scholarships and bursaries (approximately 50 to 60) that are donated annually to Earl Marriott Secondary. Winners will be announced at the Commencement Ceremony.

Criteria: GPA, volunteer work in the school or community and involvement in extra-curricular activities. Financial need is also a criterion for a number of these awards.

Deadline: Friday, April 25, 2008 before 3:00 pm.

Grade 7 Meeting

The Grade 7 Evening on Thursday, March 6 at Earl Marriott was very well attended. Staff presented a powerpoint outlining information about timeline for Gr. 7 articulation, course selection, Grade 8 timetables, the semester system, the timetable and information about clubs & teams as well as how to support your child in high school. Grade 11 Course Selection

Grade 11’s will be completing their course selection from Monday, March 4th to Wednesday, March 6th. Counsellors will be visiting classes to distribute and collect the course selection forms during Block F. Any grade 11 student who has a grade 10 or grade 12 course during Block F must attend course selection in the library on Friday, March 8th during Block F. Grade 8 and 9 Course Selection

We had a very good turnout of parents at the Course Selection Information Evening on February 21st. For any parents that missed the presentation, please click below for a copy of the powerpoint. Students will attend an assembly on Monday, February 25th to submit their selections.
