Student & Class of the Month

Posted on Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Each month, the Social Responsibility Committee receives nominations for class of the month and student of the Month. The committee wants to recognize groups or individuals who do exceptional work in the area of social responsibility. The aim is to award students who go beyond the regular class work.

The winner for September’s Class of the month is Mr Adam Roberts’ Block B Leadership class. These students worked very hard to organize and supervise the Terry Fox run. Because of their efforts, hundreds of dollars have been raised and will be used for the good of everyone. The same students also provided their help and support to the Grade 8 Welcome day. Their work in this area helped ensure the success of that first ever event at EMS. Congratulations to all the students and their teacher Mr. Roberts.

The student of the month award for September went to 2 students; Ivan Townsend and Dan Dixon. The students worked very hard and on their own time to raise money for the Guatemala Humanitarian trip. The fact that the two students are not going to Guatemala makes their effort ever more commendable. Congratulations to both of you for the good work.

Coming in 2008…
The Global Citizens’ Committee will be organizing a raffle for two pairs of tickets to a Canucks game! Raffle tickets cost $3 each, or 2 for $5. 1000 tickets will be sold for this raffle. The draw will take place either Jan. 30, or when rafflet tickets are sold out – whichever comes first!

The Legacy Project

Posted on Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Earl Marriott Student Council has committed to a long term legacy project in conjunction with Free the Children, a major Canadian based international charity. The school is aiming to raise $10 000 dollars this year to build a primary school in the Kono District of Sierra Leone with full teaching staff and supplies from the ground up; as well as a total of $36 000 in the long term to help completely build up infrastructure within the community by creating a clean water source, stockpiling and maintaining medical supplies and employing teachers at the school as well as developing alternative sources of income for the community. Sierra Leone was rated by the UN in a 2006 census as the absolute worst country to live in worldwide. This fractured nation fresh out of a decade long civil war needs our aid to develop a stronger infrastructure and Earl Marriott is going to try and help. Meetings are held every Thursday in Ms. McGowan’s room and all new members are welcome to join the legacy project. Our first major fundraiser will be the ”Battle of the Bands”, to held in the spring of 2007.
